“I fell into the technological space by accident”

I am super excited to launch the first episode of Building the Future podcast. It’s taken a lot of months and coffee drinking sessions to get here.

In this episode, I sat down with my good friend Iyin Aboyeji. He was the first person I reached out to interview for my podcast, and he said yes immediately. He came over to the hotel I was staying in Lagos after midnight and we recorded this episode late into 2 AM.

In this podcast, we explore how to build platforms. Not just any kind of platform, but the kind that enables the next generations of African entrepreneurs build scalable businesses across the continent.

Iyin was a co-founder at Andela, a talent accelerator startup which raised $24m from Mark Zuckerberg’s foundation. He later left to start Flutterwave, a payment processing company which is growing really fast and had raised money from several other investors including Ycombinator.  He is a serial entrepreneur, and is widely accepted as one of the leading African founders and was listed in Forbes 30 under 30 influencers in Africa.

The best entrepreneurs are the ones that don’t follow the rules

So we talked about Iyin’s previous businesses…why he wanted to be a taxi driver, how he sold his first business in his final year at University of Waterloo….what led to Andela…and why he jumped ship to start Flutterwave.
